The Zanigrad Fortress
After the loss of the surrounding castles, hidden shelters located on hardly reachable grounds were given prominence. Despite its important military and civil role, Zanigrad is today abandoned.

How to get there:
Take a car from Koper to Ljubljana. When you see the sign for Dekani on the fast road, turn right and drive along the county road through the village of Dekani, Cepki i Rižana. In Rižana turn right for Buzet, and drive all the way to Hrastovlje. Continue
After the peace was signed in Worms in 1521, and after the loss of Mokovo, Socerbo, Novigrad on Karst and Črni Kal, hidden shelters located on hardly reachable grounds were given prominence. Such castles, which were also the storage places for the entire village tangible property, include those in Zanigrad and Črni Kal. Having lost its military significance, the fortress in Zanigrad was no longer mentioned in the reports of Venetian auditors in the 16th century, which did not mean it had stopped being used by the villagers. The village of Zanigrad, once noted as Villae Xuonigradi, is located on the southern part of the underhill Kras, not far from Zazid and Hrastovlje. Zanigrad is completely abandoned today.
